Studio
Throughout my studio courses at the Tulane University School of Architecture I have developed both hand drawing and digital skills.
Adobe photoshop
Rhinoceros 3D
In my second studio course I created both hand drawings and Rhino drawings to represent a vintage tool, mine being a Zippo Lighter. The Zippo lighter was originally designed to create an easily accessible and portable tool that would be able to light a flame with solely one hand. The user is able to flip up the cap covering the wick, and then use their thumb to spin the wheel which ignites the flame. Through the use of motion illustrations my drawings emphasize the hinge detail and the wheel, both being the points of impact which let the tool fulfill its intended design.
The second phase of the project was designing a pedestal to display my tool. My design is comprised of three elevations of the lighter: the cap closed, the cap halfway opened, and the cap completely opened. The lighter was designed as a small box, but in reality is able exemplify two of earths detrimental elements. As the lighter starts to open it moves closer to the surface, as if it’s grasping for air. The pedestal represents the story of one simple box releasing a flame fueled by oxygen, a tool with the ability to both expand and create.
